Officially, no-one seems to know who he was but he certainly made his mark in the minds of millions of people around the globe.

There have been all kinds of theories as to his identity and his whereabouts today, assuming he is still alive of course. However, the “Tank Man” remains a mystery to this day.

A hopefully unforgotten moment in history – I remember this event so well. Do you?

BACKGROUND: 25 years ago today, tanks rolled into Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China to crush a movement begun by students and taken up by ordinary citizens. The People’s “Liberation” Army turned its deadly fire upon the very people it was sworn to defend, killing hundreds upon hundreds of civilians who were peacefully protesting against official corruption and seeking democratic reforms.

To this day, the Chinese government governs without electoral legitimacy, denying nearly one in five humans basic rights of free speech, assembly, and due process. It hopes through censorship and historical revisionism to erase the stain of “June 4” upon its hands from the bloody crackdown. Indeed, the very image you see here of a single man defying a line of tanks near Tiananmen Square is banned inside of China, and many have never even seen the picture or know what it represents. This week alone, China is clamping down on dissent, arresting any who seek to honor the fallen or commemorate the date; it has blocked Google over the past few days, just as it has silenced and outlawed free and open social media such as Facebook and Twitter behind the “Great Firewall” of China.
